Our Story

In 1997, Maggie and Heather Smith (a powerhouse mother/daughter team) and Heather’s father Win Smith re-imagined and rebuilt The Pitcher Inn from the ground up. The desire to create a hotel sprang from a lifetime of hospitality, a house overflowing with friends and family, and a long-term love affair with Vermont. The Pitcher Inn was a way to extend that feeling of joy and welcome to the world.  The Smiths were determined, however, that The Pitcher Inn wouldn’t be just another quaint New England bed and breakfast: it would redefine traditional notions of design and expand exponentially the idea of comfort. It would entertain and inspire, and tell the story of Vermont along the way. The Smiths hired local architect David Sellers to bring their dream to life within the envelope of The Pitcher Inn’s original, 19th Century façade; five designers were engaged to create extraordinary, experiential guest rooms that captured Vermont legends old and new.The new Inn opened its doors in the fall of 1997 to great acclaim; the rest, as they say, is history. We hope very much you’ll come and stay; we have a wonderful story to tell you…
